ATVs in AK

We still cannot quite get on Alaska time. We woke up before 6 a.m. here and just could not go back to sleep. We needed to do laundry. Faithful blog readers will know that I am a little crazy about having clean clothes. Airplanes gross me out and I always want to sanitize my clothing from such travels. In addition, we'd hiked yesterday and gotten pretty dusty and sweaty. We tried to do laundry last evening in town and were shut down by this place called The Roadhouse. This place is THE breakfast joint in town and also has laundry facilities available, but only during some really weird hours. They turned us away and we thought we'd be stuck with dirty laundry forever. We weren't. We came to the fancy lodge in Talkeetna this morning and did laundry at 6 a.m., you know, like normal folks would. ;)
The view from the fancy lodge didn't stink!
I was so excited to have the laundry done that I thought today was going to be my day. We enjoyed breakfast back at our B&B (sans the annoying lady from Georgia and her dentist husband). I was wrong about it being my day. JACKSON SAT ON MY FAVORITE SUNGLASSES THAT I HAVE EVER OWNED IN ALL OF MY NEARLY THIRTY YEARS ON THE FACE OF THIS PLANET. The side just snapped right off. No worries. I didn't just have Lasik this winter. My eyes don't need protection from the sun. They do not need protection from the elements. They're just $4,000 eyes. NO BIG DEAL.

Except it was a huge deal to me and we shall be replacing them in Anchorage tomorrow.
RIP favorite sunnies
Yesterday we'd read about an ATV tour out of Talkeetna that sounded...interesting. Jackson called and got us on the books for 10 this morning. We got there and found that an older gentleman, Dennis, and his dog, Chena, were waiting to lead us on a tour of the area.

We listened to Dennis drone, go into greater detail than we could ever hope for or imagine, talk about the history of the area. He had stories from 1910 through the present. YEP. YEP.
Dennis and Chena
One neat thing was that Chena rode on the back of Dennis' ATV the entire time. He was such a good dog and I really enjoyed him.
ATVing in the rain in a rain suit. Cute, no? :/
If you can read faces you see mine is saying, "what did we get ourselves into, Jackson?"

The tracks we rode along
We finally left town and headed for his "homestead" about 7-9 miles from town for an afternoon of dining, shooting and panning for gold. Can you say, "Alaska?!"

The river is apparently cold and will kill you in minutes.

I HAVE AN IDEA LET'S CROSS OVER IT ON A NARROW PATH ON AN ATV!
THAT SOUNDS SUPER SAFE AND SANE!!!!!!

The pond and stream at the "homestead"

Behold: the homestead

Dennis, for all of his long-windedness, was an excellent marksmen
and attempted to show Jackson how to shoot

Let it be known that ever since we shot in the SPORTING GOODS STORE WITH FAKE GUNS in North Dakota, Jackson has talked mad crap about my shooting skills. Read on, dear friends, to see how that turned out for him.

Also worth noting, I was a better camerawoman than he was. I caught his entire shot. He drops the camera as I shoot.
Nailed it!!!!!!

MISSED IT COMPLETELY. COMPLETELY MISSED IT.
DID NOT EVEN HIT THE PAPER.
A COMPLETE MISS.
MISSED.
M-I-S-S-I-T- MISS IT, MISS IT, WHOOPIE!
Disclosure: we sat at Dennis' table to shoot a gun designed to kill elephants. We'd met Dennis a good two hours prior and we're about 3,000 miles from anyone who would notice that we were missing. Dennis didn't have us sign a waiver. Dennis acted like he did not know what insurance was when I asked him about the price of it up here. None of these things seemed like a big deal at the time. It occurred to us as we drove away that this was all a bit...odd. Hey, we lived to tell!
Bonding with Chena

Chena going for a swim

Jackson getting his "Parker Schnabel" on

Still "Schnabel'ing" while Chena tried to get a game going
I was able to fake interest in gold panning for a few minutes. Then I got tired of pretending to care and started to play fetch with Chena. She was as obsessed with chasing sticks as MacKenzie is with playing ball.

Jackson finally gave up the hunt for gold and we got to go back to town.
One last view of the "homestead"
We rode back to town WAY faster than we came out prompting Dennis to tell me that I was: ballsy, gutsy and would make a great FBI agent. Yep. Chew on that. I cannot figure it out.
Completely safe, Mom. Don't worry. Jackson would NEVER*
lead me into a danger zone.
*If never meant always that'd be true.
We came back from the tour and just wanted to shower. The mosquitos up here are like nothing you've ever seen and we were covered in spray that smelled awful. We got back to our cabin only to find that the shower would not get warm and then stopped turning off all together. We called the B&B owner and he had to turn off water to the whole cabin. He moved us up to the Chalet (a real bummer!) into a suite and then knocked on the door to tell us that he'd comped BOTH NIGHTS of our stay for the troubles. You guys, WE ARE NOW MAKING MONEY ON THIS TRIP. That's not 100% true, but still. Who gets $700 in free flights and $500 in free hotels?! The Petefishes. That's who. Maybe today was my day after all. We lived through our Dennis visit and got a free hotel stay! Winning!

A little restaurant in town, Wildflower Café, came highly recommended so we dined there this evening. The Executive Chef for President Bush (#41) is the chef at this restaurant and it shows. The chowder was amazing. Amazing. The crabcakes were really, really awesome. The halibut and fries were incredible. The cheesecake (hey! dinner was so good that we had to try dessert) was impressive, too. It was one of the best meals we've had...EVER. We even got our B&B owner a gift certificate since he did give us so much money back. (Anyone else proud of my cheapo husband for thinking to give back to someone who gave to us?! This is a HUGE step.)
The best seafood chowder ever made.
I think we're finally starting to get the hang of this Alaskan time now. It is almost 10 p.m. here and we are getting tired. I just couldn't go another night without bragging about my shot compared to Jackson's. It is the little things in life that he'll never stop hearing about...EVER. :)

Visiting J. Bates

Last weekend we had dinner with Shaya and Josslyn Bates. Mr. Bates was in Puerto Rico for a family funeral so we took dinner to Shaya and made sure all was well. It was and we enjoyed some baby time!
Adorable sleeping baby

We got brave and took MacKenzie with us as she'd been in her cage all day and we didn't want her to have to stay in there. She did really well with Josslyn. Once she got a chance to sniff her she was cool to just hang with Shaya's dog, Fiona.
MacKenzie checking our baby Josslyn

Busy baby!

Josslyn is getting so big already. She really likes looking in mirrors right now. I don't blame her, she's adorable!
"Say what?!?"
Baby J even joined us at the dinner table. Allow me to brag on Jackson for a moment. He worked all day on Friday (ok, working is a stretch for his job, but still) and still came home to make, from scratch, garlic mashed potatoes, the mandarin orange salad that Shaya loves (thanks again, Aunt Janna, this salad has been a smashing success with all of our friends and a new signature for Jackson and since he never gives you credit, I shall!) and he grilled steaks at her house. I made brownies and bought ice cream so we had sundaes. It was excellent. I'm glad that Jackson was willing to do all of that. I think Shaya enjoyed the company and I know I loved it.

Snuggles
I spent a ton of time just loving on Josslyn. I love this stage where they're adorable and then I can hand them back to Mom for a diaper change.
Why am on this dude's lap?!
Jackson still isn't comfortable holding her because she's so small. She can tell who doesn't want her and being a lady who knows what she wants that doesn't please her. She let him know about it, too.
"Why is MY mommy talking to that baby?!"
MacKenzie, as I mentioned above, did well until she got ignored for Josslyn. Then her little nose looked like Jackson's (crooked) and it wasn't her best look. She got over it quickly once we headed out on a walk.
Group walk!

Baby J lovin' the walk!
Shaya grabbed a jogging stroller for a steal of a deal at a garage sale so we put Baby J in it and hit the streets. We had 3 adults, 2 dogs and a baby. It was like a t.v. show but it went really well. The next day we saw Shaya and Josslyn again for a bit before we headed to Marion to visit my Dad and Diana to celebrate Father's Day. We got to have Marion's Pizza King pizza (the best!) and catch up with them before stopping in for a quick visit in Upland.
Addie still isn't aware that she is not a lapdog. Some things never change!

Here and there, this and that

Over the last month or so things have been moving along at rapid speed and I've not been blogging. I shall do a quick crash-blog to catch up with all of the photos on my iPhone. Enjoy. ;)

One evening...no idea when...we stopped at Heidi and Andrew's to help them plan out the paver patio that Heidi has been dreaming of for some time now.

First, the saddest video:

Josslyn loves her Nini and Papa (me, too, great people!) and cried like a...well baby...when they left that evening after swinging in for a few minutes. Poor little girl!
Gunner looking adorable!
Gunner and I aren't into planning such things so we hung out and got bitten by mosquitos. ;) (I still love you, Heidi!)
Jax, who was supposed to be sleeping, supervising from above
We played with the kids until they had to go to bed and then got to work. I think Heidi will have a great patio once she decides on a layout and laborer-HA! :)
"THIS WAY!!!"
Not sure when I took this photo either, but MacKenzie looked adorable sitting on my center console. :)

The trail at the Fort
One weekend we drove over to Ft. Ben for a 4+ mile training hike. It was a gorgeous day and we really must get over there more often.
A practical joke? A cinnamon themed feast at my big meeting?!
I had a huge meeting at work last week and I was mildly nervous about it. There were going to be about 50 people there so I put catering in charge and focused on the content of the meeting. Big mistake. I walk in and there is nothing but CINNAMON. EVERYWHERE. IN EVERYTHING. CINNAMON. THE ENTIRE ROOM SMELLED OF CINNAMON. I thought for sure the meeting was doomed but alas the folks of Muncie love cinnamon (sickos) and all was well. Success!

Quit. The. Cuteness.
The other day MacKenzie made herself a nest on my side of the bed while I was getting ready for work. It was all that I could do not to climb back in with her myself.
"Home, Jeeves!"
MacKenzie got to go on a 7 mile walk with my friend Amber and me the other day. By the end she was ready to go home even if that meant driving herself!

ALASKA!!!!!

We knew ahead of time that our flight from Chicago to Anchorage may have been overbooked. I put us on a volunteer bump list when United promised a $300 voucher per person if you were bumped. The Petefish family doesn't turn down travel vouchers if we can help it. I reasoned that most folks going to Alaska go on cruises and would flip out about missing their original flights. I was right and when we got to Chicago the gate agent was waiting on us to ask us to move to a different flight. The voucher was now at $350 per person. We said we'd absolutely do it and were booked on a flight to Denver then to Anchorage and only arrived 2 hours later than planned. $700 for a two hour bump!! We also got upgraded to exit rows for those flights, an upgrade that United typically sells for a ~$125 each leg of the flight. Winning!! :)

Alaska here we come!! $700 richer!
We didn't get to sit next to each other on the flight from Chicago to Denver, but I sat next to older gentleman who worked on Navy submarines. We chatted almost the entire flight and at the end he gave me my absolute favorite compliment, "you sure are a great person to sit next to on a flight!" Thank you, kind sir. :) Flying into Denver was a first for both Jackson and me since moving in 2010. It was so weird. We felt like we were at home and I think both started for baggage claim before realizing that we were just passing through. The views landing and taking off made us miss Denver so much. Tear!
Quite the view from the plane's window
I got to sit next to the handsome gentleman with whom I share a last name on the long flight from Denver to Anchorage. 5.5 hours to be exact. We watched "Lone Survivor" on our iPads so two hours passed quickly. Then we felt a little restless. I started reading The Fault in Our Stars and forgot that there was a world around me. Holy cow that's a touching little book. Eventually we landed in Anchorage and all was well with the world. I'll even forgive the airport for having us come into the gate housing a Cinnabon. Vomit.
Just in the airport and already spotted a bear!
We got our luggage (it had arrive two hours before us and was waiting for us in a secure room. That's the way to do it, folks! No waiting at baggage claim! United just went all out this trip. Way to go, United!!) We thought we felt OK to get showered up and get dinner. We were wrong. We'd been traveling for more than 14 hours and even showers didn't wake us up. We went as zombies to a quick dinner at a restaurant that J.P. Morgan had a deal with. Jackson was able to buy a $25 certificate for $6.50 as long as we spent $37.50 at the restaurant. It was a great deal and the food was awesome. We were just too tired to really even speak to each other. After that we gave up and went back to the hotel to sleep. I think it was like 7 p.m. Alaska time but we didn't care. We were done!

I woke up at 2:45 a.m. and peaked outside. The darkness was not dark. At all. It was amazing. I cannot get over how long the sun stays up here! I quickly went back to bed until a more decent hour.

We felt much better in the morning and decided to explore downtown Anchorage a bit before heading to Denali State Park to hike.

We made it!

Alaska...#50!
Jackson had yet another coupon for a little café. He bought a $10 gift card for $2.50 as long as we spent $15 on our visit. Amazing. The food was awesome, too! I'll miss his perks working for J.P. Morgan when the transition to Great-West is complete.

We stopped at a grocery store on the way out of town and were amazed at the expense of groceries up here. We're not talking Turks and Caicos pricing, but it still was much higher than in the lower 48. There is no sales tax up here on anything, though, and we're loving it!!

The drive to Denali State Park was about three hours. We stopped along the way at some viewing areas. We also got some shots when I stood out of the sunroof and snapped photos while Jackson drove. No worries, there isn't much traffic and this seemed completely safe. ;)

Denali!!
*Trying out a lens on my new camera- THANKS, MOM!
For my birthday, my Mom and Guy got me a "real" camera. I typically only take photos on my iPhone to avoid looking like a tourist but we feared iPhone photos wouldn't do Alaska justice. We were right. The camera they got for me takes way better photos. It even feeds to an App on my iPhone and comes into my camera roll as if they were taken on my phone. Amazing!!

Mt. McKinley aka "Denali" (white cloudy like thing is the mountain)
This is an iPhone photo for quality comparison

Sunroof photo. Amazing, no?!
We got to our hiking point and chatted with some folks who had just finished. The information online said it was a 2 mile hike. Our new friend said it was 7. (WHERE DOES JACKSON FIND THESE WEBSITES THAT LIE TO ME ABOUT HIKING TRAILS' DISTANCE?!?!!?) We decided to try it anyway and we were not disappointed. The only qualm I had was being up here all alone (Seriously, there were not any other hikers in the lot when we headed up) and being attacked by a bear is a real possibility up here. I'd read online to keep talking while hiking to scare them off and to occasionally yell, "HEY!!!!!!!! BEAR!!!!!!!!" at the top of your lungs. I assume this is some kind of Alaskan joke to get tourist to do something silly, but I don't care. I did it and we didn't see a bear so I shall shout like this forever more. :)

Gorgeous scenery

Breathtaking.

Living in a screensaver

I haven't a clue what Jackson was doing...
Still a little snow left..

Gorgeous.

Storms rolled in, but the view was still OK by us

Panoramic view by the iPhone

We just loved it up there!
We did eventually run into another set of hikers. They were locals and very friendly. They gave us tips for the rest of our trip before getting back on their way. They were camping for four days along the trail. No thank you. Something no one told me about Alaska (and I read about it a ton before coming up) was the mosquitos here are like none you've ever experienced. They are aggressive and find safety in numbers. There were at least 56,789 of them on our hike. Thankfully we had some organic oil bug repellant from our time in Montana that seemed to throw them off a bit. I'm not sure how long that will last. I hope for the entire trip or else we'll look like we've got chickenpox!

We burned just a few calories on the hike
On the drive from the hiking spot to our B&B all of the cars in front of us pulled over. We couldn't figure out why until we got closer and saw....
A MOOSE!!!!!!!! We FINALLY saw a MOOOOOOOOOOSE!!
I've never been happier!! I popped out of the sunroof and get this shot before our new friend retreated into the woods. He was HUGE!!!!

We made it to our B&B a short time later. The main house is called the "Chalet" but we are staying down the hill from it in a little cabin.

The Chalet
Isn't this little cabin adorable?! It looks like a dollhouse in this photo, admittedly.
Our little cabin in the woods

Told you it was ours :)
It just one room with a bathroom- indoors!- but it is plenty for us. We like the idea of being a bit secluded, but still able to pee and shower inside! :)
A little dark...an inside view

Gorgeous beams!
We really like our little cabin! It is perfect for a true Alaskan adventure. There is one more cabin next to us but other than that we're alone out here in the wild!
My handsome dinner date!
The hikers we ran into recommended eating at a brewery called "Twister Creek." We were not disappointed. I had pesto pasta with salmon in it which was quite good. Jackson had a pulled pork sandwich served with the best sweet potato fries ever. There weren't supposed to be there, he'd ordered curly fries, but it was a happy accident that I consumed. I love when that happens. Yes, they brought out his curly fries and he called them "standard." The sweets were anything but. His loss!

We meandered through town a bit before heading back to the cabin to turn in for the night. We have satellite television but opted not to watch it and instead read before bed. It was very rustic reading on our Kindles and iPhones. ;) Oh well, can't take the city out of the folks just because you took the folks out of the city!

Today we have an ATV adventure planned complete with gold panning and shooting! Woo hoo!!
