Maui #3

Mom took a flight to Honolulu today but we've still got a few more days in Maui before we head that way. She flew out of the smallest airport near our condo on a 10 passenger plane. It was comical. She made it safely, though, so all is well! After we dropped her off we headed for the beach. We wanted to get there early and get in the very small free parking garage. We did! Hooray!

We went down closer to some rocks and coral for the morning to get a better chance at seeing fish when we snorkeled. It worked! We saw a bunch, but no Nemos. :(
Tough way to start the day... ;)
A school of fish
A Petefish! :)
I was obsessed with the yellow one
Snorkel selfie
I did much better with snorkeling today. I was able to calm myself down and just breathe normally while swimming. That doesn't sound difficult but I'm 1. not a strong swimmer 2. afraid of sharks 3. not a strong swimmer and 4. TERRIFIED of sharks. I did just fine swimming today and didn't see any sharks. SUCCESS.

Jackson always stays out in the water much longer than I do so I made friends with some folks next to me on the beach. They were from Vancouver and gave me tips on things to do in Maui and in Vancouver when we're there for the marathon. Bonus! Once Jackson finally gave up snorkeling for the morning we made the quick trip down the beach to have lunch. We ate the the Hula Grill again because it was just so good the other day. It did not disappoint.
The BEST fish and chips
Their fish tacos and fish and chips were both phenomenal. The place is not cheap (think $55 for lunch without alcoholic beverages!), but it is delicious and the view is amazing. Once we finished there I took up my spot again on the quiet part of the beach. Ahhhh. I could sit there every single day and never get tired of it.
Ahhh my favorite place!
As I mentioned above, the Canadians I met this morning told me about some neat places to see around the island. We headed out to one of them and couldn't find it, but we did stumble upon an awesome hike. Win!
The view from the beginning of the hike
Such a gorgeous walk
Happy Jackson!
The trail got a little...overgrown!
Life in a screensaver
"Stop taking pictures and walk!"
Climb down this, he says. It will be fun, he says.
Yes, I did scale DOWN that
Maui, stop showing off!
Toughin' out the "trail"
Jackson was loving life because finally I had picked the trail and gotten us into more than we signed up for. We were scaling up and down hills, trying not to fall of cliffs, you know, the normal stuff. ;) Once we finished the hike (we were racing against a setting sun by the end!) we decided to drive down towards the huge rocks we kept seeing.
"Narrow Road" is the understatement of the century
We were driving along and all of the sudden the two-lane road became one. It was still supposed to be used to go each way, though. It was so narrow that my side view mirrors kept hitting the brush on each side. Astonishingly, we made it to the other side with no issue. Once we were there, though, the line of cars just kept coming and we eventually had to go and hope for no head-on collisions. Alas, we survived after one close call with a Jeep full of teenage girls. Hawaii.
The moon is my favorite in this photo
The photo we grabbed before turning around was probably worth the harrowing drive. Once we were back to the condo our bodies and nerves were shot so we had a romantic dinner of McDonald's. Please, contain your jealous on such a culinary treat. ;)
