On my return walk to the condo a local man told me that I looked like I might melt (it was HOT and HUMID already that morning) and I told him that parts of me needed melting. He looked at me, rolled his eyes and said, "all woman are the same even if they don't look it!" I laughed, agreed and headed for the condo.
I met up with Jackson and we headed down to the beach for the day. Guys, life was hard this week. ;)
See how tough it was?! I mean honestly. Working on my tan (or avoiding a sunburn if you'd like me to be more accurate in my description) and not running out of reading materials were my two big priorities.
Now here comes the part about being a survivor though. I'm all relaxed and warm from laying half in the shade of an umbrella and half in the sun so I decide to join Jackson in the waves. All is well until a CRAB pinched my toe! HARD! You guys, A CRAB ATTACKED ME! I was defenseless so I did what any self respecting woman in her mid (possibly late- who can recall) 20's would: I screamed and ran out of the water faster than Usain Bolt. Duh. My toe ached and even released some blood. I was less than impressed. (Mainly because sharks can smell blood so now the water wasn't safe.Yes, that is how I think. I would like to thank Shark Week for messing with my head.) I didn't return to the water for fear that Mr. Crab would try to finish the job is ripping off my toe.
In all honesty I can only assume that I accidentally stepped on the crab and he was just defending himself. That doesn't change the fact that it hurt. A lot.
We eventually came inside to get cleaned up for dinner. No fear, my toe was already on the mend. The view from our room was just the best thing ever so forgive me for documenting it like 900 times this week.
I got out of the shower and realized I'd had a sunscreen failure on my face. Yep. You can pretty much see my finger strokes where I just completely missed a spot on my forehead and down the middle of my nose. Lame. (Editors' note: I am NOT cross-eyed, I was just looking at the phone while taking the photo. Yes, I am aware that I need a new iPhone cover as mine has gotten stained from being in my pockets. I do have a birthday coming up- my 26th I think-and Coach does make really cute iPhone5 covers. *cough* hint *cough*)
Also, my Mom thinks I look exactly like her in the towel photo. I don't see it but she was insistent about it so decide for yourselves.
I was pretty much always the last one ready to go this week. I stand by my claim that it is because everyone else operates on American time and I was on "island time." I eventually made it downstairs (burnt splotch on my face and a crab bite on my toe cannot keep me from enjoying a sunset) and we all walked to dinner at the Cabana Bar & Grill. Again. Those fish tacos were worth a repeat trip. I wasn't disappointed and we had a great dinner. Susie even demanded yet another family photo and since she graciously paid for this vacation (thanks again, Susie!) we obliged. The sunset was a letdown due to clouds, again, but that's ok.
Jackson and I came back and spent the rest of the evening in hammocks looking at the stars and listening to the ocean. Life was tough. We only returned to the condo because the bugs LOVE me (honestly, it was as if I were Kim Kardashian and the bugs were paparazzi) and I was being eaten alive. I now have a record 22 bug bites, a crab "bite" and a weird sunburn. Wow. Who is ready to vacation with me next?! Ha!!!
We set our alarm for the first time since Sunday morning so that we wouldn't sleep our last morning on the island away. We got up, had a leisurely breakfast and then went for a 7 mile walk on the beach in the early morning light. The hotel pictured above is where my Mom and Guy stayed on their honeymoon quite a few years ago. I've wanted to come to the Turks since as they were smitten with it. They weren't lying when they said it was an awesome place. It was fun to see where they stayed.
We even got to ring the bell on the beach since we'd seen Jojo the dolphin on our trip. I don't think this was the spirit of the bell. I think it was meant for real time sightings. I don't care. Who doesn't love ringing a random bell?!
We walked all the way down to where we snorkeled at the beginning of the week. The pictures don't do the beauty of the morning justice.
We came back and finished packing before suiting up for a couple of final hours on the beach. I tried to memorize the sights and sounds so that when I needed to go to my happy place in the future things would look as they should.
We bid goodbye to our awesome condo and piled into the rental car to head to the airport. We stopped for sandwiches (sooo good) and visited the bakery one last time. (No, I didn't have a muffin today. Thanks for checking in. I actually didn't get a single baked good. Curtsy. Bow.)
We got to see Jackson's favorite restaurant, Sweet T's, again while paying $6.25 a gallon for gas. (Isn't the restaurant fancy?) Yes, $6.25 per gallon. Yes, $6.25 for every single gallon. I thought I'd repeat it a few times to help it sink in. No, I couldn't believe it either. After a few wrong turns and a little confusion we made it to the airport. When we returned the rental car they asked if we had all four tires, we did. If we had a windshield still, we did. If we filled it up with gas, we had. That's all. We were set. Wow. It blew my mind. (Clarification point: it blew my mind that we returned the car in one piece after Jackson's attempts at "driving" ha! I'm just kidding. Kind of.)
Yep. Check out that line. We got there at 1 p.m. for a 3:30 p.m. flight and just got through the security line (the line pictured above) when it was time to board our plane. Yes, it was 90 degrees and humid. Yes, we were standing outside with our luggage for roughly 2 hours. No, it wasn't much fun.
We got on the plane and it looked like it was on fire because the air conditioning was so cold against the hot, humid island air. It felt so good. We'd gotten so sweaty in line that Jackson and I both changed our shirts in the plane's bathroom. I was even able to move our seats to have a row to ourselves for this 3 hour flight. Now perhaps people do want to travel with me since I have a gold touch for seating arrangements, generally. ;)
It was certainly tough to drag ourselves away from the beach and the condo this afternoon. We are already planning our next island getaway. Stay tuned. ;)
